The Ferrante Letters:
An Experiment in Collective Criticism
With Merve Emre, Katherine Hill, and Juno Richards.
“Understanding together, understanding each other, made it possible to continue writing. We can see how collective criticism has cohered as an orientation—or perhaps a counterorientation—to the norms of our discipline. We’ve worked steadily through these years in shifts, according to our different academic and life timelines, weaving our labors together with shared patience, trust, and investment. This is the model that we propose as a prompt. Our experiment in collective criticism has been a mutually beneficial and revelatory process that has shaped our readings and reshaped each of our understandings of ourselves as readers and writers in turn. None of the essays could have found their final forms without this long process of sharing, talking, and writing. None of us are now the same writers, or critics, or friends, or women we were when we began it.”
